Can we help Emily with her Master’s Thesis about Local food?

Corey Lake Orchards customers, I received this from Emily and have been in touch with her to understand how important this information will be to her thesis and other local growers like myself, so if you have a few minutes, let’s try to help her get the information she is looking for.  Thanks in advance,

Beth

Hello!  My name is Emily Simms.  I am a graduate student in the Geography Department at Western Michigan University.  You are invited to participate in a research project entitled “Local Food: Perceptions and Realities in Kalamazoo, Michigan” which I am conducting with my thesis adviser, Dr. Lucius Hallett, IV.  This project is designed to analyze local food systems and consumption practices in southwestern Michigan. This research is being conducted as part of my Master’s Thesis requirements.  The questionnaire should take no more than 15 minutes of your time and your replies will be completely anonymous.  Please following the link posted below to participate.  The survey will be available until October 31st.

The final results of this survey will not only be beneficial to my graduate research, but will also be helpful to the local food community in southwestern Michigan.  First and foremost, this thesis research will fill a gap in the local food academic literature.  This survey, and resulting documents, will give a concrete example of who local food consumers are in southwestern Michigan.  In addition to the academic benefits of this research, an understanding of who local food consumers are in our area will benefit everyone in the local food community.  The results of this study will help vendors better market their products to their current customer base.  This study will also determine what customer bases have yet to be reached by the local food community in our area.  Similarly, growers will have a better understanding of what consumers want from their local food system and why they choose to buy local.  Hopefully, this research project can provide a summary of the local food community as it is today in southwestern Michigan.  Again, this survey is completely voluntary and anonymous.  The process should take no more than 15 minutes of your time.   I appreciate your time and help!  Please take a few minutes from your day to participate and spread the word.
