Yet another apple update……

U Pick Tomatoes:  We still have plenty of tomatoes for you to pick at $14.00 bushel.    There are so many tomatoes we are offering a special:  Pick a bushel for yourself and pick an extra half bushel for us to donate to a food bank and we’ll give you $3 off the bushel you picked.   If you don’t need tomatoes but have some extra time to pick some for food banks, we will happily accept your help as we hate to see them go to waste.

Picked Tomatoes:  We have picked tomatoes by the bushel for $22.  It helps if you can call ahead to order these.

Baked Goods: This weekend we will have all the usual pies except apple, instead our bakers are making fresh apple dumplings which are similar to apple pie.  Apple dumplings are whole cored apples (our Cortland apples) wrapped in pie dough with a caramel sauce.  It’s a “must try.”  They are introducing a new cookie this week: Caramel Apple, these will be for sale in the market along with all the other varieties of cookies they usually have.

The latest on apples….as the apples come in, there are even fewer than we thought and some varieties have worse frost damage than others.     Please realize when you buy a bag of apples here, you will find some with some frost scars or blemishes on the skin.  This does not hurt the apple, but it sure doesn’t look very “pretty.”   We are taking out the worst apples for cider.  In order to offer apples for sale and keep the prices down as much as we can, this is the only way we can do it.    We appreciate your understanding of this.   When you are out, please ask any of our clerks to show you what the frost marks look like on apples if you haven’t seen this before.

Quick apple update:  Apples are coming and going about as fast as they ripen and are picked this year, so we encourage you to call ahead to make sure the apple you want is available.  269-244-5690.  We will continue to keep our 2012 chart on the website updated with the latest information.  You can find the link to the chart on the home page of our website:  http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/apple-update-for-2012/

Other Fruit:    Available in the market now: watermelon, bosc winter pears, and fall raspberries.  We are getting the raspberries in almost daily, but call us in advance to make sure they are available. 269-244-5690.

Vegetable Update:   We have yellow summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, spaghetti squash, winter squash, and onions.

Fall mums: We have mums available now, they are located next to the large bird in the cutting garden.  We also have sunflowers cut for your vases.

Grape Update:  We will open the U-Pick grapes on Sunday, 9-9, both Concord (Purple) and Niagara (White.)  Please go here for more information: http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/update-on-grapes-apples-and-labor-day-weekend/

Picked Grapes:  If you want grapes by the bushel, please call ahead to order them.  They will be $10 a half/bushel or $18 a bushel.  269-244-5690.

How late will we be open this year?  Many of you are asking this as you want to get apples, onions, cider to freeze, winter squash and other items you want to store for the winter.    We usually try to stay open through October; but this year, we will close when the apples are done.  The Fall Color tour is scheduled for Sunday, October 14th this year and if our apples are gone by then, this could be our last day.  We’ll know more as we continue to harvest the apples.

As always, thanks for buying local, we hope to see you during the grape harvest starting next week.
