Happy Halloween week, BOGO continues and Apple Gleaning has started

Our “Buy one;   Get one or Give one” special proved to be very popular this weekend.  We also thank Mother Nature for providing some lovely fall weather and coloring up the leaves on the trees which made it enjoyable to be out at the farm over the weekend.   So, due to the popularity of this sale, we are extending it through Monday, November 4th.

Here’s the deal: You can buy any quantity of apples, and we will give you the same size quantity for free.** So, buy a bushel, get a free bushel….buy a 1/2 peck, get a free 1/2 peck, etc.    Can’t use the extra bag of apples?  Then we will be happy to donate it on your behalf to one of the many food banks in the area that we are supplying.

Another reason we are extending the sale is that we are very gratified to hear how our customers have been using their extra bags of apples to give to the community and others.  Here are just a few of the examples people have told us about that may give others ideas on how to share the bounty of this year’s apple crop in your community or neighborhood:

  • Give the extra bag to a senior center
  • Give to a teacher for healthy classroom snacks
  • Take a big bowl to work to share with co-workers (instead of Halloween candy!)
  • Buy extra bags to use in Thanksgiving baskets that their church does annually
  • Drop a bag at a neighbor’s house anonymously

This special will apply to the following varieties of apples which we currently have:

  • Fuji
  • Golden Delicious
  • Honeycrisp
  • Northern Spy
  • Pink Lady
  • Rome
  • (**The BOGO offer is not a 50% off special, you must get the 2nd bag of apples).

The BOGO special will not apply to the following varieties of apples which are already specially priced:

  • Red Delicious (Bag your own 1/2 bushel for $5)
  • Cortland & Jonathan (1/2 price or $12 a bushel)

Needless to say, this is a great time to stock up for the winter on apples. The apples that keep the best are:   Northern Spy, Red Delicious, Rome, and Fuji.   Pick up one of our information sheets when you are here on the best way to store apples.

Note:  The following apples are now gone for the year:  Macintosh, Golden Supreme, Mutsu, Ida Red, Cameo,  JonaGold, Braeburn, and Gala.

For a description of these and all of the apples that we grow, please go to the apple listing on our website:  http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/seasonal-offerings/apples/

Apple Gleaning “Plus”:  We opened apple gleaning effective today, October 27th.  We are calling it Apple Gleaning “Plus” this year because it is not a typical end of harvest gleaning.  Because we did not finish harvesting the apples this year….there are many trees that have not been touched with beautiful apples on them.    So this is a great way for folks trying to get a lot of apples to do it very economically.  You may pick apples left on the tree or off the ground for $5/bushel.    So for those people who want to press their own cider, make a huge amount of apple sauce, get “animal” apples, etc, this is the time.  For best availability of the types of apples and quality—you will want to come out within the next several weeks.

U-Pick grapes:  The White Niagara grapes and Purple Concord are still open for picking.  We have plenty of both types left to pick.  We expect to have grapes available up until the first hard–killing frost.  We have had enough frost to kill off part of the foliage, so the grapes are very easy to pick now because the leaves are out of the way!

We have decided to include onions in our buy one–get one special as well.  So pick up a bag of our sweet onions and take a second one for free.  Our white onions are $7.50/bag.   Our onions keep very well in a cool place where they can’t freeze.

Apple Cider:  We pressed extra cider this week for those who may want it for Halloween parties.   Just to be sure we have it for you, feel free to call us and place an order and we will put it back for you.  269-244-5690.

The bakery is now taking orders for Thanksgiving and Holiday pies and other goodies.  Stop in and fill out an order form and let our wonderful bakers do the work for you!  Michaela makes the most amazing dinner rolls (ask any of us who were allowed to sample them last weekend) so they will also have these available for your Thanksgiving orders.

2013 closing date projection: We will be open our regular hours (8 to 6 daily),  7 days a week through Monday, November 4th.     After that, we will be open in November at a reduced schedule of 4-day weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sundays and Mondays) while we still have apples to sell. The last day for full bakery products will be Sunday, November 3rd.

Due to popular demand, we are going to try to continue making donuts on Saturdays and Sundays  only in November as long as the market remains openWe will also try to continue to press cider into November as well.  We seem to have some customers who claim they are addicted to our donuts and cider and want us to keep them coming as long as we can! So, we are willing to give it a try.

If you are here on Thursday, Halloween, you may get to see Denim and I in our matching grape costumes!!  Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards thanks you for buying local and we hope to see you out this week.     Beth

We visited your orchard for the first time last weekend. What a fun experience! We also appreciate the fact that you are so community oriented with giving your produce to food banks and encouraging giving to others with your BOGO sale currently running. We are from New Carlisle IN (about an hour from you), it was a beautiful and easy drive over. We had coffee and a delicious cinnamon bun for the ride home. Thank you for a fun day!
