Fall 2012: The year we all learn to love Golden/Yellow Delicious apples!!

Earlier in the year we told you that based on this year’s apple shortage you might have to try a new apple instead of your usual favorite.  With it being apple season, we are all used to having the market chock full of different kinds of apples, but right now, our shelves are mostly full of Golden/Yellow Delicious.  If this is your favorite apple, then you are all set as these are  what we have the most of this year!   If you haven’t tried one before, please come enjoy one of our free samples.  Golden Delicious have a gingery-smooth sweet taste under a thin skin.  They are great to eat fresh or cut up in salads; an excellent cooking apple for making applesauce, juice, pie or other desserts.  It was my mother’s favorite pie apple.

No U-Pick apples:  Another  reminder that we will not have U-Pick apples this year due to how many apples we lost in the spring frost/freeze.   We had many families who came last weekend not realizing this and thus, many disappointed children.  Some parents asked (most begged and pleaded!) if they couldn’t just take their kids out to the orchard to pick a few.    We ask for your understanding of this unusual and difficult year.  When you come to pick apples, we want it to be a good experience, which it would not be this year.  75% of our apple trees have less than 20 apples on the tree, and then,  some of those are damaged (scarred) by the frost, fortunately we can make cider out of these.   Here are a few pictures to show you the picking conditions.

An apple here, an apple there does not make for very easy picking….

Apple update:  Apples are continuing to go fast given how few we have this year.    We encourage you to call ahead to make sure the apple you want is available.   If we have the apples in the market when you call, we are happy to hold them for you.   269-244-5690.  We will continue to keep our 2012 chart on the website updated with the latest information.  Please note that some of the dates for when our apples will be ready have moved back due to the cooler weather.  You can find the link to the chart on the home page of our website:  http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/apple-update-for-2012/

The following apples are available in the market:

  • Braeburn (pecks, half pecks and by the pound only)
  • Golden Delicious (bushels, half bushels, pecks, half pecks and by the pound)
  • Honeycrisp (half pecks and by the pound only, but going fast)
  • Jonathan (half-pecks and by the pound only)

The following apples are currently gone for the year:

  • Cortland
  • Gala
  • EarliBlaze
  • Macintosh
  • Molly’s Delicious
  • JonaGold
  • JonaMac
  • Nu-Red

Cider:  This week’s cider blend is gala, jonathan, honeycrisp and golden delicious and will be available on Friday, September 21st.     Please ask for a sample if you want to try it.  We are sorry but we are only able to make cider once per week due to the apple shortage.  We try to press every Thursday afternoon,  which makes it available starting Friday am.  Lately we have been selling out in 2 – 3 days.

U-Pick Grapes:  Whew!  What a second busy week we have had with grape pickers.   Right now we estimate we have picked about 60% of the Concord (Purple) grapes and  98% of the Niagara (White) that are available to be picked this year.   We anticipate the white Niagara grapes will be gone by the weekend.  Please call in advance if you are coming to pick Niagara grapes to see if there are any left (269-244-5690).   If you want Concord grapes, you need to come out soon.  The grapes are ripe and a few are starting to split.   The forecast for rain and possible frost will only make things worse.  Right now we still have plenty of Concord grapes left and the picking is good.    If you are picking a lot, please bring a small wagon if you have one, we are in the middle of some long rows now!    Please go here for more information on grape picking: http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/update-on-grapes-apples-and-labor-day-weekend/

Picked Grapes:  If you want Concord grapes by the bushel, please call ahead to order them.  They will be $10 a half/bushel or $18 a bushel.  269-244-5690.

A Vineyard surprise:  Each morning I walk the grape rows to assess how many grapes are left.  This morning I was startled by a mother bird flying out at me, but then delighted at peeking inside the vines to see her young family!  (Isn’t this supposed to be a spring-time thing??)

A pleasant morning surprise in the vineyard, 9-20-12

Fall Ornamentals:  We have started bringing in our large “Jack o’ Lantern” pumpkins.  We have some beautiful and hardy mums in all colors, including large pots with 3 different colors in them.    White pumpkins, small “pie” pumpkins, cinderella pumpkins, miniature gourd pumpkins and all kinds of other gourds are now available.   The painted pumpkins and gourds by Diane are here and are as cute as they are each year.

Winter Squash:  We have butternut, buttercup, acorn, spaghetti squash, hubbard and sweet dumpling squash.

Baked Goods: This weekend we will have Apple, Blueberry, Cherry, and Cran-Apple pies, all of our apple pies will be made with the fresh apples grown here at our farm. They will also have their apple dumplings which are made using our whole cored Cortland apples. They will also have pumpkin cupcakes (the same ones everyone loved last year), along with all the usual cookies.

Other Fruit:    Available in the market now: bosc winter pears, and fall raspberries.  We are getting the raspberries in almost daily, but call us in advance to make sure they are available. 269-244-5690.

We hope to see you soon and thanks as always for buying local.

Grapes, Grapes, Grapes…..

U-Pick Grapes:  Whew!  What a busy week we have had with grape pickers.  We have had a lot of grapes picked this week.  Right now we estimate we have picked about 25% of the Concord (Purple) grapes and 50% of the Niagara (White) that are available to be picked this year.    The most frequently asked question is how long will they last?  We hope to have them several more weeks but it depends on the weather and how many people come out each day.  So don’t wait too long if you want grapes this year!   Please go here for more information on grape picking: http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/update-on-grapes-apples-and-labor-day-weekend/

Picked Grapes:  If you want grapes by the bushel, please call ahead to order them.  They will be $10 a half/bushel or $18 a bushel.  269-244-5690.

Cider:  This week’s cider blend is gala, jonathan, jonagold, cortland and golden delicious.  Our cider makers think it is the best so far this year!  Please ask for a sample if you want to try it.

Fall Ornamentals:  We have some beautiful and hardy mums in all colors, including large pots with 3 different colors in them.    White pumpkins, small “pie” pumpkins, cinderella pumpkins, miniature gourd pumpkins and all kinds of other gourds are now available.   The painted pumpkins and gourds by Diane are here and are as cute as they are each year.

Winter Squash:  We have butternut, buttercup, acorn, spaghetti squash and sweet dumpling squash.  The Hubbard squash are still ripening.

Baked Goods: This weekend we will have all the usual pies except apple, instead our bakers are making fresh apple dumplings which are similar to apple pie.  Apple dumplings are whole cored apples (our Cortland apples) wrapped in pie dough with a caramel sauce.  It’s a “must try.”  The new cookie they brought last week, Caramel Apple,  was a big hit and sold out fast so there are more of these again this weekend along with the other varieties of cookies.    This weekend will be the last weekend for peach and strawberry rhubarb pie for the year.  Starting next week they will offer a new “cran-apple” pie which is made with our fresh apples and dried cranberries.

Other Fruit:    Available in the market now: watermelon, bosc winter pears, and fall raspberries.  We are getting the raspberries in almost daily, but call us in advance to make sure they are available. 269-244-5690.  All of the watermelon are picked for the year and we are having an end of year special:  Any watermelon for $2!

It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend, we hope you will come out and enjoy being at the farm and picking a few grapes while you are here!

Grapes are ready!! And another apple update…..

Our U-Pick Grapes opened on Sunday, September 9th.  Despite the early morning fog, we had a lot of groups out to pick grapes for juice/jelly/pies and fresh eating.  Everyone who came found good picking, sweet grapes, and seemed to enjoyed the experience; especially the aroma of ripe grapes!    We anticipate having grapes to pick for several more weeks, but it depends on the weather and how many customers come out each day.   We have more concord (purple) available then niagara (white) grapes.  So don’t wait too long if you want to get white grapes!   Please go here for more information on grape picking: http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/update-on-grapes-apples-and-labor-day-weekend/

Our first U-Pick customer for 2012, No fog slowed them down!!

In case you have wondered how we get all of these grapes picked, we do have some mechanically harvested, if you were driving by last week you might have noticed these monster pickers going through.

Fruit and Vegetable Update for the beginning of August

As summer continues, we want to remind you that everything is continuing to ripen earlier than normal  and with the hot dry summer– not staying long.  Our fruit crops are running several weeks early and our summer vegetables, usually peaking now, have already peaked and will be finishing early.   Keep this in mind as we don’t want you to miss some of your favorite fruits and vegetables.  The vegetables we still have are:  zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, cucumbers, red potatoes, peppers, eggplant, sweet corn, onions and green beans.

Peaches:  Our new peach orchard (those small 2 year old trees along Corey Lake Road) is pleasantly surprising us with a better yield than expected.    We have small boxes available: $3.50/quart (2 pounds) or $6.00 for 2-quarts (4 pounds) daily.  On days where we pick a lot, we are selling them by the peck (1/4 of a bushel).  We still don’t have enough to sell by the bushel, but you may buy up to 8 pecks at a time (2 bushel).   This week we still have some Red Havens for $10 a peck.  We have started picking a new variety called Coral Star.  These are freestone, larger than the Red Haven and are $12 a peck when available.  Not only are our peaches beautiful this year, they are very sweet due to the dry conditions.    If you call the market and we have peaches on hand that day, we are happy to hold them for you.  269-244-5690. We are expecting to pick a  good share of our peach crop within this next week and then we will have only 2 more later varieties to come.

Vegetables by the bushel:    Our green beans are flourishing with the recent rains, they are $25/bushel when ordered in advance.  We have plenty of green peppers and they are available at $15.00 a bushel when ordered in advance.  Call 269-244-5690.

Picked Tomatoes:   Finally, more of our field tomatoes are ripening.    If you want picked tomatoes, please call us at 269-244-5690 to get on our list.  We offer “first quality” tomatoes at $28 a bushel or “seconds” at $15.00.   Our “seconds” are great for making sauce, salsa or juice.  They just have a few blemishes/spots on them that you need to cut out.

U-Pick Tomatoes:  Due to the high volume of customers who want to pick tomatoes this year, we have decided to start the year by scheduling customers in to pick.   This allows us to make sure that when you come there are enough tomatoes to pick.    So please call the market to get on our “U-Pick tomato” list.  Give us your name, phone number and how many you would like to pick.  We will start calling customers back and letting you know when you can pick.  Hopefully by the end of August  we will have enough tomatoes so  we don’t need to schedule anymore. U-Pick tomatoes will be $14 a bushel.  We thank you in advance for working with us as we try this new scheduling system in hopes that we can give you a better picking experience.  We will be starting to call customers this week to pick tomatoes.

Tomatoes ripening in the U-PIck tomato field, 8-7-12

Watermelon:  Our own home-grown seeded watermelon is finally ready.  We have the round Crimson Sweet and the long-striped Charleston Grey.  We are still bringing in cantaloupe daily.

Summer Apples:  We will be harvesting the rest of our Earli-blaze apples within a week.  If you would like to get some of these, please call the market (269-255-5690) to give us your name, number and how many bushel.  This is probably the best summer apple we grow.  It is tart, good for eating or for apple sauce and pies.    Since we had a good crop of these, we are offering them at $20/bushel.

Onion bags:  As our sweet onions dry, we are bagging them in 8-pound mesh bags.  The white and yellow onions sell for $7.50/bag and the red onions sell for $9.00 a bag.

Baked Goods:  We offer baked goods on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  This week our bakers will be bringing a new pie called “Berry Peachy.”  It combines our blueberries and peaches together…..you’ll want to try this one!

Bartlett Pears:  We have about 10 percent of our normal pear crop and we will be harvesting them within the next week.   We currently have them for sale on the market in small quantities of $3.50 quart (2 pounds) or $6 for a 2-quart (4 pounds) and a $10.00 peck (1/4 of a bushel).   If you want bushels of pears for canning, please call and give us your name, phone number and how many bushel you would like to have.   (269-244-5690)  We can’t make any promises until we finish picking and see how many bushels are available.  They will be $36/bushel and we may have to limit customers to a few bushels to allow as many as possible to get pears.

U-Pick Grapes:  We are going to have a good crop of blue Concord and white Niagara grapes this year.  We anticipate them being ready around September 10th.     This year we are expanding the amount of U-Pick concord vineyards available to ensure we have enough for all that want to pick.   Please call us the week of August 27th for more information on our opening date or check the website.   We want to make sure the grapes are ripe before we open and that will depend on the weather for the next few weeks.   The pricing will be the same as last year:  25 cents/pound or 20 cents/pound if you pick over 100 pounds.

Fall Apples:  As you know we have a very limited apple crop this year due to the April frost and freeze.      We have about 25% of our normal crop and we feel fortunate to have that many knowing how other growers were more severely impacted and have none.  Sadly, we must inform you that we will not have U-Pick apples this year due to the light crop.  We know how much our customers enjoy this annual experience and we love having you.  We will have limited amounts of picked apples for sale as they ripen.  Within the next few weeks we hope to give you more information about what varieties we will have available and estimates on when they will be ready. We appreciate your support and understanding and let’s all hope for a better year in 2013.

Thanks as always for buying local.
