Summer arrives – brandy returns! – and autumn donut flavors start this weekend.

In the market we have:

  • Vegetables: zucchini, summer squash, cabbage, peppers (many kinds), cucumbers, kale (red Russian and curly from Becca’s garden), eggplant, sweet corn, green beans, Brussels sprouts, onions (many kinds) and shallots.
  • Blueberries:  We have them in both small and large picked quantities (from pints up to 1o pound boxes.) We hope to have picked blueberries around for about one more week to 10 days. Our own field of U-Pick blueberries is done for the year….thanks to everyone who came out to pick!
  • Cantaloupe: Our own melons are ready and coming in every day. Given the expected heat, they will probably only last about a week. So come get some soon.
  • Watermelon: Our own are slowly coming in.
  • Apples: We have 3 kinds of summer apples on the market now: Paula Red and Earli-blaze for eating or cooking, and Mollie’s Delicious, which is a sweet eating apple. We have small quantities on the market. If you want bushels, it is best to call ahead to make sure we have them.  If you are trying to make applesauce. we have some Paula Red “seconds” available at 1/2 price.
  • Picked Tomatoes:  Field tomatoes are coming in, along with 5 kinds of mini-tomatoes. We have the mini’s available to sample.  See which one you like best, or you can get a box with all the kinds mixed.
  • U-Pick Tomatoes:  When will U-Pick tomatoes be ready has been the question of the month and we haven’t had a good answer due to this year’s unusual weather.  It looks like we will open next week. But….we need your help (and a little more patience) as we open the field up. Given the pent-up demand for tomatoes this year, particularly with the blight that has hurt many gardens and farms in the area, we need to control the flow of customers for a while until there are plenty to pick (which there will be in September hopefully.)  So, if you are wanting to come out in the next few weeks, please call the market and ask to be put on our U-Pick list. We will schedule customers in as there are enough ready, to avoid having so many folks out at the same time that not everyone gets want they want.
  • Potatoes: we have four kinds of potatoes on the market and we dig them fresh.  We have white, red, Yukon gold, and the russet baking potatoes.   We will have potatoes by the bushel if you would like them for fall/winter use.  Let us know how many you would like and when we do our final harvest we can call you.  (269-244-5690).

What’s coming next:

  • In next week’s update, we promise to get you the fall apple forecast on what kinds we will have, when they will be ready and pricing.
  • Concord and Niagara grapes: This is the 2nd most frequently asked question behind tomatoes is when will the grapes be ready. Please check back about September 9th and we will hopefully have an opening date by then. Before we open, we will want them to be at their full ripeness and sugar content, so it may be closer to the middle or end of September before we open (weather dependent of course). We will have plenty to pick. Pricing will be the same as last year. 25 cents a pound or 20 cents a pound if you pick over 100 pounds.
  • Around Labor Day weekend we expect to pick the few Bartlett pears and Stanley prune plums that we have this year (most were lost in the severe winter and the May frost).

Brandy: You read correctly! The wait is over and we’ve begun selling Hubbard’s Brandy again. The brandy we are selling now was produced at the height of last year’s bounty, capturing the essence and spirit of the harvest. For brandy, we have apple, cherry, Concord grape, Niagara grape, double distilled Niagara grape, and pear. We also have our sweet ‘Polecat’ wines: blends of apple brandy infused with apple, black cherry, sweet cherry, and peach juices. Please note: we are not doing Saturday tastings for the time being, and we aren’t licensed to sell on Sunday’s before noon. This weekend in the bakery we will have:

  • Pies: apple, blueberry, berry peachy, cherry, cherry berry, chocolate, peanut
    butter, peach, strawberry rhubarb, and fresh blueberry glaze.
  • Cookies: apple and flower cut outs, monster (oatmeal, choc chips, m&m’s and peanut butter), chocolate chip, lemon, and caramel apple.
  • Bread: Whole Wheat, cinnamon, vegetable, blueberry zucchini.
  • Double chocolate zucchini muffins and blueberry zucchini muffins.
  • Cinnamon rolls, cinna-monkeys, and sticky buns.
  • Donuts: Apple, buttermilk, pumpkin.
  • Slushies: Apple cider and white grape peach

A note from the bakers: With the aroma of fresh apples coming into the market
this week, we could not help but think of fall. This weekend we will be switching
to our fall flavors of donuts, which include apple, and pumpkin along with our
standard buttermilk. We also have a new slushie flavor for you to try: white
grape peach. It is a slightly sweet peach flavor that is heightened by the white

From Becca’s Garden: Red Russian kale, curly kale, chard, sunsugar cherry tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, celery (please ask in person if you’re interested and I’ll cut it fresh for you), herbs. I’ve got lettuce and spinach growing for fall, leeks looking good, carrots coming for a few weeks from now, and hey! A picture for you to enjoy.

Local meat: One-pound packages of bacon are back! New this week: bulk ground sausage thanks to requests from customers. Let us know what you think. We also have spare ribs, bone-in pork chops, bacon sausage breakfast patties, regular breakfast patties, mild links, and hot links. Look for all these items in the freezer in the bakery.

Happenings on the farm this week:  Two good things happened here this week, we got some summer-like weather and rain!  Both which will help give our summer crops that have been struggling a little boost.

We also have started on a very difficult and time consuming task of re-training new grape vines to replace the ones that were injured by the severe winter in some of our  white Niagara blocks.  We have all been learning how to do this and trying to figure out if there is any easy way (we haven’t found it!) since this is the first time we have ever had to do this in the lifetime of these vineyards. (Note: this will not affect the U-Pick grapes this year….we will have enough grapes for everyone to pick.)

We have not mowed the vineyards this year as we needed to protect all of the grape vines until we could do this task.

It’s starting to look like fall on the market….

Thanks to everyone who came out on Labor Day weekend….whew….what a busy weekend for us,  we loved having you but we are still tired!!  If you have been to the market in the last few days then you’ll know firsthand that it is starting to look like our fall market.  Bins of apples are replacing spots where summer vegetables used to be, fall red raspberries are coming in, winter squash has replaced summer squash and there are beautiful mums to pick up.  Our cold storage behind the market and the loading zone is finally complete, just in time for our harvest.  It has been a busy week getting boxes out to the orchard, bringing them in full, and loading them into the cold storage.

Bartlett Pears:  We still have these available and may have them for one more week.  If you want them by the bushel ($28 bu.) please call ahead to reserve them.  269-244-5690.

Tomatoes:  We still have plenty of tomatoes.  You can pick for $13 a bushel.  The picking is easy and the tomatoes are beautiful this year.   If you want them already picked, we have extended our Labor Day sale (while they are still plentiful) for $16 a bushel, if you buy 4 bushels or more, they are $15 a bushel.  We usually have these on hand but it helps if you could call ahead to order them so we can have them picked.  269-244-5690.

Fredonia grapes:  We are picking Fredonia grapes and have them available in small eating quantities.  This is a seeded, purple grape, similar to a Concord, but sweeter and earlier.

Peaches:  We picked the last of the peaches yesterday and there are just a few left in the market for sale in small quantities.  Peach season seemed too short this year, didn’t it?

Stanley Prune Plums are available in the market in small eating quantities, these are a purple, sweet, freestone plum which is good for canning or just enjoying fresh.  We will have bushels of these available in about a week.  Please call us if you want to order them by the bushel.  269-244-5690.

Baked Goods:  This weekend the bakers will be offering cookies, breads, brownies, cupcakes and cinnamon rolls.  Pie flavors  for the weekend will be:  apple, blueberry, cherry, peach, berry-peachy, sugar free peach, and chocolate.    This weekend we have a very special pear pie available–it is a must try.

The Brandy House will be open on Saturday from 1 to 4 as usual, please stop in and sample some brandy, talk with Bruce and see/smell the large batch of apples he is fermenting for apple brandy.  We are gearing up to make a large run of pears for pear brandy.

Picked apples in the market:  We have the following varieties available in the market now, in small quantities as well as bushels.

  • Mollie’s Delicious is a large, sweet eating apple.  It is a late summer apple which we will only have a short time.
  • Gala is a great eating and cooking apple.  It has a crisp snappy bite over a mellow sweetness.
  • Jon-A-Mac:  This is a good cooking or eating apple.  It has all of the best qualities of a Jonathan apple and a McIntosh.
  • Earli-blaze:  This is a good cooking or eating apple, and it particularly makes a wonderful apple pie.  We sell this apple to bakeries (including our own) for apple pie.

Fall apples:  The remainder of the fall apples are not ready yet, so repeating the same info that we gave you last week.  We have lots of apples this year, so there will be plenty for whether you want them already picked or to pick your own.   You do not need to call ahead to reserve any apples this year…when we start picking each variety by the bushel–we should have them on hand.   (except for the Mutsu–see note below.)  The fall apples that will be available this year are:

  1. Braeburn–mid October–(no -U-Pick)
  2. Cameo–late September
  3. Cortland–mid September
  4. Fuji–mid October
  5. Golden Delicious–late September
  6. Golden Supreme– early October (no U-Pick)

Grape Update:  You can definitely smell the grapes ripening now and they are coloring up.  We have not changed our prediction from last week which is: we think the white Niagara grapes could be ready around 9-13 and the Concords possibly the week of 9-23 or later.  Continue to check our website or watch for our emails on the opening date.  We will be taking sugar samples to help guide our decision on when to open.  We want the grapes to be ripe and sweet when you come to pick.   We have lots of grapes this year…..so once we open, we should have the purple Concord grapes up until the first frost.  There is a more limited supply of the white Niagara grapes.    U-Pick grapes will be the same price as last year:  25 cents/pound to pick, if you pick over 100 pounds, they will be 20 cents a pound.

Fall 2012: The year we all learn to love Golden/Yellow Delicious apples!!

Earlier in the year we told you that based on this year’s apple shortage you might have to try a new apple instead of your usual favorite.  With it being apple season, we are all used to having the market chock full of different kinds of apples, but right now, our shelves are mostly full of Golden/Yellow Delicious.  If this is your favorite apple, then you are all set as these are  what we have the most of this year!   If you haven’t tried one before, please come enjoy one of our free samples.  Golden Delicious have a gingery-smooth sweet taste under a thin skin.  They are great to eat fresh or cut up in salads; an excellent cooking apple for making applesauce, juice, pie or other desserts.  It was my mother’s favorite pie apple.

No U-Pick apples:  Another  reminder that we will not have U-Pick apples this year due to how many apples we lost in the spring frost/freeze.   We had many families who came last weekend not realizing this and thus, many disappointed children.  Some parents asked (most begged and pleaded!) if they couldn’t just take their kids out to the orchard to pick a few.    We ask for your understanding of this unusual and difficult year.  When you come to pick apples, we want it to be a good experience, which it would not be this year.  75% of our apple trees have less than 20 apples on the tree, and then,  some of those are damaged (scarred) by the frost, fortunately we can make cider out of these.   Here are a few pictures to show you the picking conditions.

Cider:  This week’s cider blend is gala, jonathan, honeycrisp and golden delicious and will be available on Friday, September 21st.     Please ask for a sample if you want to try it.  We are sorry but we are only able to make cider once per week due to the apple shortage.  We try to press every Thursday afternoon,  which makes it available starting Friday am.  Lately we have been selling out in 2 – 3 days.

U-Pick Grapes:  Whew!  What a second busy week we have had with grape pickers.   Right now we estimate we have picked about 60% of the Concord (Purple) grapes and  98% of the Niagara (White) that are available to be picked this year.   We anticipate the white Niagara grapes will be gone by the weekend.  Please call in advance if you are coming to pick Niagara grapes to see if there are any left (269-244-5690).   If you want Concord grapes, you need to come out soon.  The grapes are ripe and a few are starting to split.   The forecast for rain and possible frost will only make things worse.  Right now we still have plenty of Concord grapes left and the picking is good.    If you are picking a lot, please bring a small wagon if you have one, we are in the middle of some long rows now!    Please go here for more information on grape picking: http://www.coreylakeorchards.com/2012/08/update-on-grapes-apples-and-labor-day-weekend/

A Vineyard surprise:  Each morning I walk the grape rows to assess how many grapes are left.  This morning I was startled by a mother bird flying out at me, but then delighted at peeking inside the vines to see her young family!  (Isn’t this supposed to be a spring-time thing??)

Fall Ornamentals:  We have started bringing in our large “Jack o’ Lantern” pumpkins.  We have some beautiful and hardy mums in all colors, including large pots with 3 different colors in them.    White pumpkins, small “pie” pumpkins, cinderella pumpkins, miniature gourd pumpkins and all kinds of other gourds are now available.   The painted pumpkins and gourds by Diane are here and are as cute as they are each year.

Winter Squash:  We have butternut, buttercup, acorn, spaghetti squash, hubbard and sweet dumpling squash.

Baked Goods: This weekend we will have Apple, Blueberry, Cherry, and Cran-Apple pies, all of our apple pies will be made with the fresh apples grown here at our farm. They will also have their apple dumplings which are made using our whole cored Cortland apples. They will also have pumpkin cupcakes (the same ones everyone loved last year), along with all the usual cookies.

Other Fruit:    Available in the market now: bosc winter pears, and fall raspberries.  We are getting the raspberries in almost daily, but call us in advance to make sure they are available. 269-244-5690.

Other Fruit:    Available in the market now: watermelon, bosc winter pears, and fall raspberries.  We are getting the raspberries in almost daily, but call us in advance to make sure they are available. 269-244-5690.  All of the watermelon are picked for the year and we are having an end of year special:  Any watermelon for $2!

Vegetable Update:  We are out of cucumbers and green beans.  We still have yellow summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, spaghetti squash, winter squash, and onions.  Sweet corn is gone for the year.

Tomatoes:  We still have U-Pick tomatoes available ($14 a bushel) and if you call and order in advance, we will still have more first tomatoes ($22 a bushel already picked) and some second tomatoes ($12 a bushel already picked).

Fall mums: We have mums available now, they are located next to the large bird in the cutting garden.  This is a great time to start your fall decorating!
